What Should Your ‘Shemergency Kit’ Contain?

2 11 2008

When I first saw the shemergency kit introduced some time back on Racheal Ray, I was way beyond impressed! Big things do come in small packages. If you are wondering what I’m talking about, then go through the introduction it in the creator’s own words.

“ What are shemergencies? They’re the beauty blunders, fashion faux pas, and personal care predicaments that keep women from looking and feeling their best. Say so long to minor mishaps with the Shemergency Survival Kit, new from Ms. & Mrs. This portable, silver mesh case comes packed with 24 compact solutions for life’s little emergencies. From daytime to playtime, the Shemergency Survival Kit is first-aid for gals on-the-go. ”

The shemergency kit very cleverly covers all the items that a girl could need by packing them into a tiny wire meshed purse. Yet I feel there a few more items that could be added to it if only they were available in miniature sizes or if the kit itself was a bit enlarged to accommodate many more items. Or you could choose to make a similar one for yourself by replacing items when they get used up.

Other Shemergencies/ Stuff a Girl’s Bag Should Contain:

1. A Fan:

What if your stuck waiting for someone for too long in your car and don’t want to run down its air conditioning? Or unexpectedly get stuck in an elevator? You could go for a mini fan but my choice is the hand powered and very green chinese or japanese fans!

2. Pepper Spray:

Personally I do not know anyone who carries a pepper spray along with them but as they say, “Better Safe than sorry!”

And since this post is about what your bag should contain, this little item may have to take a pass. At the time of emergency or panic, you surely will not have the time to rummage through your bag to find that spray amongst your lipsticks, perfumes and other items. The best place would be in your keychain, car keys or maybe as a pendant on your chain!

3.  TO BE CONTD….

NaBloPoMo or NaNoWriMo?

1 11 2008

November! Sweet November! I have no idea how sweet it is going to be having had to face the most unusual start to my day and month today, but there is a pleasant thing to write about. I am talking about the national (read international) month of continuous blogging or novel writing.

A quick summary:

NaBloPoMo = National Blog Posting Month

NaNoWriMo = National Novel Writing Month

While I am excited by the idea of writing a novel in this month am reeled by the thought of having to write 50,000 words. Thats an approximate of 6 pages per day. Gulp! Seems like an almost NO to me. NaBloPoMo on the other hand does seem a bit easier. I am not sure if I’ll be blogging on all the days of the month. The icing on the cake is that you can keep some of your posts private yet be counted, which might work for me to complete the one month blog target!

And ofcourse if your lucky you could get your book published or win few prizes too!

What Does Sumaiya Mean?

5 10 2008

Something that brings in people to my blog is their hope to find an answer to the question, “What does Sumaiya mean?”. I do not understand how that may be related to my blog unless the name ofcourse, and how my blog ends up in the search result. Or is it that there is actually no satisfactory meaning to my name that it ends up with my blog as one of the results? Well I too for one have searched the meaning of my name but then had to give up. Having heard, “Oh! What a beautiful Arabic name” (I heard the same today too!), nobody knows exactly what it means, other than the fact that it was the name of the first woman martyr in Islam (brutally murdered :( ).

I wonder sometimes that in this generation we could say it was her (Sumaiya RAH’s) name, but what did it mean when she was born and named by her parents? Wouldn’t that name have meant something during her lifetime? Or don’t all ancient names have meanings? One definition of my name I liked was “Warrior Princess” mistakenly coined by one of my friend. I had told him it was the name of the first female martyr in Islam and next time he tells you really are a warrior princess! Thankyou J, I am on cloud nine :D .

But jokes apart, what does Sumaiya really mean? Think you have the answer or do you want to discuss? There’s no shortage of space to comment..   So all you Sumaiya’s out there, their relatives, friends or going to be parents of the confused little ‘What does my name mean’ baby Sumaiya’s, Comment away! :)

Update: This is how Sumaiya is written in Arabic -> سمية

Child Safety

14 09 2008

My heart sinks to my stomach when I read about how little kids around us lose their lives. My heart goes out to every parent that has had to suffer the loss of a young one. Bahrain being a small country all the death reports of children losing their lives are often in the newspaper and very difficult to forget. Here are some news that have got very close to my heart and by reading which I hope you will all take measures on how to avert such happenings and protect your kids and kids around you. I will not get into the horrific details as it is painful to me as I explain but will leave them to your imagination.

Bus: Recently there was an incident. I must mention that the temperature in Bahrain at this time of the year is extremely hot and humid. A young kindergarten boy fell asleep in the bus on the way to school that he was still asleep when the kids got off at school. The driver unaware of the sleeping child in the bus, closed the doors of the bus as he got down at home. At around noon when he came back to the bus to go back to the school he heard a muffling noise. He rushed to the bus to see the boy lying in a pool of blood and gasping. The boy was rushed to hospital, yet he couldn’t survive.

Pool: A group of women went swimming. A common practice here for girls/ women to reserve a pool for few hours or a day so that they could swim without men around. They took their kids too along. As the moms talked and cooked, the kids splashed around. One of the boys went too far in the pool and drowned. The mom in question noticed her son missing, spotted him at the bottom of the pool and screamed for help. What happens? None of the women there knew how to swim! With lot of screaming and wailing when they could get a man from outside to pull the child out, it was again too late. He too couldn’t be saved.

A pool incident reminds me of something that could have happened some years back. My family and a few family friends reserved a pool to go swimming. My brother a 2 year old baby at that time too was with us. We got him an inflatable swimming tube so that he could stay afloat in the water. The tube that comes with an underwear kind of seat for kids. As we all swam around and had fun he was at the front end of the pool where the water was 2 feet approximately. In between swimming we would go kiss him, play with him on his side of the pool and return. All the kids were in this area. After the pool party when we were packing our stuff into our cars we noticed something strange. The plastic seat had reduced to one thread, so thin that it could have snapped any moment when he was in the water. Keeping in mind he wasn’t a very heavy baby it was too strange to happen. We couldn’t understand how that had reduced to a single thread.  It is said that kids can drown in a single inch of water and this was around 24 inches! What if he had slipped and none of us had noticed for a few seconds/minutes? We kept thanking our luck that nothing had happened but the giant ‘what if’ was there to haunt us for days!

Door: A baby boy lay playing near the main door to his house as his mom indulged in household chores. His uncle who had gone out to pick up clothes from the dry cleaners came home with a huge pile of hangers and clothes. Since his hands were occupied on reaching the door to their house, he kicked the door open. As rotten luck would have it the baby was right there and ended up being knocked on the head by the door. Thus a nephew ended up accidentally being killed by his uncle!

Pesticide: Two working parents who happened to be working on a weekend when their two young kids of 4 and 7 were home, decided to lock them in their apartment till they got back from work. The adjacent apartment happened to be sprayed with pesticides and insecticides which seeped in below the doors of the children’s flat and poisoned them. At evening when the parents returned the children looked fine but by midnight the entire family began throwing up. This story had many variations in the paper. Once it was said the children’s apartment was recently sprayed, the other said the neighbour’s apartment was sprayed. Either way the children died of pesticide poisoning. The parents too were hospitalized as they too had inhaled the gas but it was the children that were affected most.

A few days back I was walking near my house. I probably had to go buy something. Instead of choosing the straight lane I decided to go through the alleys. It was around 8 in the evening, dark in our side of the world but yes the streetlights were on. I noticed two siblings ahead of me who had just gone to a store to buy candies for themselves. Seeing them I was shocked thinking how their parents could let such young babies outside without an adult. One was a boy aged 4 and the other his sister probably half his age. Though the boy was protective enough by holding the little girl’s hand he suddenly realized he had forgotten something at the store. He stood there in the alley instructing his baby sis to go back home. She stood there confused amidst the criss cross lanes and I stood there shell shocked. How could the boy tell this baby to find its way? Lucky I’m there, what if I wasn’t there and this kid was alone in this road? How will I ask this child where her house is? She’s too young to speak. With these thoughts in my head as I walked towards the girl, she was so scared and confused she wailed out loud. The boy who hadn’t got too far in the opposite direction came running and then took her home.

Kids tend to run into the road especially if you are driving through an alley. Drive slowly and keep honking whenever you reach each end of the road. This way the kids are aware of an oncoming vehicle and in turn you too are safe.

Imagine you and few friends are out walking at night in a calm place. Each of you have your kids too along. You see your little baby who doesn’t yet speak going ahead of you. You can still see him, so you let him get ahead yet keeping a watchful eye on him. He gets a bit too far and then suddenly there’s a blackout. How would you react? You could call out to your child but how would he respond to you? What if he doesn’t let out a cry as kids would normally do, and what if he decides to move somewhere else in the dark? How would you find him? A very scary situation, it’s not my imagination but this happened to be one of the nightmares I had.

It’s very important to care for kids, but more the ones than haven’t begun communicating yet. We never know when they could get into trouble or what is going on within them unless they cry or begin speaking. What would you do in all the above situations? How would you prevent these from happening?

Lemon Juice With Mint

24 08 2008

What began as an office order by randomly picking out some juice from the menu, this juice has become one of my personal favourites! Though this drink is mainly known by the name of Lemon Juice with Mint, I believe Mint Juice with Lemon would do more justice to it. As mentioned sometime back, I now have the recipe perfected through trial and error thanks to which my mom inists I make it all the time!

Lemon Juice With Mint
Serves 4-5
Duration: 5-10 minutes

Ingredients:
5-6 ice cubes
5 tbsp sugar
Bunch of fresh mint leaves extracted from 6-7 mint twigs
Lemon Juice of 1.5 Lemons
600 mL water

Blend all the ingredients for a minute in a blender. Remove the lid at once and separate the thick green foam from the surface of the juice with the help of a large spoon or strain lightly. The drink is ready to be served. The magic ingredient I have discovered in this drink is ice, try preparing without ice and you’ll notice the gigantic taste difference. Sweet with a minty feel and a mysterious tangy touch, this drink is so cool that you can actually feel it coolly trickle down your food pipe. Best way to beat the heat and quench your thirst during summer!

Jinxed In June

31 07 2008

World Peace! Thats what I got.. Wish it was that easy to all the inhabitants of the world, but thats what I got as the content of my priority box. Time does fly! End of July already? June was definitely jinxed for me, no regrets though. Even the most minutest of things ended up going wrong. Theres a saying when everything goes right, then there must be something bad around the corner waiting to happen. Well lucky me! i totally jinxed up my month and surpingly July isn’t that bad! ;) . By the end of June I won a trip for three to one of Bahrain’s Islands through a magazine and the next month My article is published in the same magazine. And I was offered to write more for them. What more can I ask for? :)

I have learnt the hard way, NEVER to watch a movie that you’ve already read as a novel. P.S. I love You was an utter disappointment. It did absolutely no justice to the novel. I guess I shouldn’t be pinning too much of hopes on Confessions of a Shopaholic either :( . Wouldnt it be nice if novels were made to movies word to word or with all the best scenes? Bet it would be long, yet we’d enjoy it! When I was younger I would always dream of submitting a script for a movie (No longer Thank God, or maybe someday i don’t know ;) ), or while watching some movies I’d think hey I can do better than that! But for those of you from India who are interested, theres Sankalan. Wanted to write about this long back but never got around to doing it.. Sorry :(

I’ve exchanged emails like I never have in this time.. Thinking I’d do more productive stuff online and concentrate on my work I reduced my online presence. Yet I seem to have fallen in love with e-mailing. Exchange about 20-30 mails a day with any friend n I’m good! Speaking of email, Gmail has come up with two brilliant features. I love the Take a Break feature which is being tested through Gmail Labs, it blocks ur view of gmail for 15 minutes. For someone like me who keeps checking my mail every 5 seconds (I THINK, provided my server isn’t down) its really good to get some quality work done. Whenever am on a deadline Take a Break heroically comes to my rescue! Being on a network You always have the fear if any of your mails are being read and in one of my posts I’d mentioned about https. For the first few days after I posted that I would manually enter https while i opened my Gmail and finally there came a time I forgot about it too until recently when I learnt Gmail has a new feature where you could permanently set your page for https.. Cheers to a secure connection!

Heard of Freecycling? If you havent its a method where you give your used stuff for free to someone else who may need it and vice versa. Just go the freecycle website and check if your city has a group. If not you could start on your own and get Freecycling! Your waste could be someone else’s treasure is what freecycle says! The Bahrain Freecycle forum is dead I’m sure with all new members request to join being bounced (owners/moderastors listening?). But I joined another of the cities forum and its really good to see people give and take, all for free.

The heat is at its max at this time of the year. As if the Bahrain Humidity wasn’t enough, the fine dust storms have chosen to appear occassionally leaving us to wonder, is it foggy today or is it just dust? My heart goes out to the labourers and to the people who have to work by shawarmas and grills in this heat. You need to experience this pain for a few minutes to realise what these people are going through.. Bahrain rules should be thanked for a noon to four work ban for labourers and also Coca Cola Bahrain for having taken the initiative to send volunteers with bottles of drinking water for these people. Considerate indeed. A little help goes a long way! What’s summer without Summer Sales? Exactly! And thats something that helps take our mind of the heat and these days I can’t seem to take my mind off white clothing and footwear.. Yes footwear too, strange but true! :)

One word I’ve been coming across most of the times these days is Tween. So many new additions to the English language. Who coined this word? It means pre teens or youngsters between the period of being a teen, but to me tween sounds better to be a combination of teen plus queen..

Back to my writng for the magazine. I’ve taken up a challenge (oh how I hate it when I keep challenging myself) and its as tough as I thought it wouldn’t be, but here’s to hoping all goes well and by this time next week am a relaxed soul!

Boxes Of Love, Peace, Courage …

28 05 2008

As usual I was going through some news and other articles and something literally Wowed me! It was this article on Treehugger. To cut a long story short it was something about receiving a free box containing peace through post. The pics looked good and I at once clicked on to that site and registered for my box. Do I sound too confusing? Ok let me explain.

This is the PRIORITY BOX PROJECT begun by artist Franck de Las Mercedes (pictured below) in which he sends out a box to anyone who requests for them anywhere in the world. Totally free! He’s been sending it out for the last two years, since May 2006 and still sending!

The boxes come with a label saying, “Handle with care, Fragile, Contains: *****” where **** could be anything – Love, Peace, Courage, Freedom, Humanity, anything that could seek to provoke thought, to make people reconsider their ability to influence change, communicate through art and make art accessible to people from all walks of life.

See some boxes below and HERE for more. :)

On his website, Franck de Las Mercedes says, “What would you do if you suddenly received a box via mail, labeled “FRAGILE: Contains Peace”? How would you use it? Would you give it to someone else? Would you sell it? Would you just throw it away?” Oh my God, I’d treasure it! And I’d only give it to a person If only he/she means a LOT to me. But then I don’t think I’d give too.. Afterall one person gets just one box :( . I’m gonna ask everybody I know to register! :D

The series is funded by the artist, art sales, commissions, contributions and sales from their Online Art Shop and sale of “Handle with Care” T-shirts. From May 1st 2008, all the paint used for the project is donated by Pebeo Inc.

The website also states that due to the huge number of requests on this project, there is currently about a 4-8 week wait, and a one box per person limit for receiving a box. Boxes are sent out in the order the e-mails are received.

Anyone who requests for a box will definitely get one, so what are you waiting for? Request for your priority box Now!

I can’t wait to get my own box and put up its pic here, wonder what It’ll contain? ;)

LASIK

19 05 2008

Doesn’t it always happen that when we have less of something and theres a bad need for it you end up accidentally wasting the stuff you actually had? Happens to me almost all the time! When having a shower I notice that am out of shampoo.. “Well OK, theres atleast one squirt there”, I think “Enough to foam n clean my hair”. Next minute that squirt is either on the wall or on the floor. I am careful but at such times its as if some unknown and unseen forces are making me clumsy. As though they are having a fit doing their bit of mischief and see me not reach my goal.

The same when preparing a cup of tea. Oh there’s enough sugar for one cup. Next thing? The jar is on the floor. GRRR.. And all this happens when your in such a rush. Well this time its nothing different. My very last pair of contact lenses got infected within a week of using them. I use monthly contact lenses and I say last pair as am planning to get LASIK done by early next month, Insha Allah. It is recommended that the use of soft contact lenses be avoided a week before the surgery. And here I am still more than a week away from my LASIK and my contact lenses are already infected. Its a good thing I know, but I was planning on wearing it atleast upto 4 days before my LASIK. So difficult to let go!

Few years back when i used to wear glasses I found it very difficult to shift to contact lenses. It was only when my glasses broke (the frame) and when the nearest optician was far away, that I had no other option than to switch to my contact lenses which I had bought 2 years before the glasses breaking incident but had never used. Now the very last pair is infected. A good sign maybe. Like one of the principles of Feng Shui, you need to throw it out . No holding on. Yes I have finally let go off my contact lenses just like I let go of my glasses.

Though I had no problem with contact lenses in the earlier years except when it reached expiry, from the last few months I have been using contact lenses more than I should be using. Once it went upto three pairs a month. My eyes are totally prone to contact lens infection now though I do maintain them well. Any explanations?

I am so used to contact lenses that I simply hate wearing my glasses now. I guess I can give my eyes a few extra days to prepare for the treatment. Never thought I’d be preparing this early. I had planned to discard my lens 3-4 days prior to the treatment. But as they say everything happens for our own good. Back to my magnifying glasses, oops glasses. i guess I have to invest in another pair soon just for a few days. Atleast the lenses. They look totally obsolete. And to think I was looking forward to buying another pair of glares. How am I gonna wear glares along with my glasses! Well a few more days and I can be rid of these glasses. And what shall I do to it after my LASIK? Sell on ebay? Any takers for a Minus x point x? ;)

Note: For those of you planning to get LASIK done or those interested in knowing about it, I found the FAQ’s on this site really informative. Click Here.

Time..

12 05 2008

I’ve saved lots of time in the last two weeks, but was I upto anything productive? Maybe and maybe not.

The first week at office I spent WEAKLY in front of the comp ( I was infront of it but too weak to chat/browse/work). But luckily had added all the websites I visit to Google Reader and saved from a lot of clicks, new tabs, and pressing ctrl-enter after each website name. Bless my ignorance that I was aware of what RSS is and bookmarking sites but not of reader! Anyways I was enlightened to it 2 weeks ago accidentally. Yes serendipity, but ofcourse discovery of someone else’s discovery by chance ;)

I had this strong urge to get something (Confidential Info) done, but thanks to few obstacles I couldnt go for it. But then the urge to get it done then and there was so large that I thought of doing it online. Half heartedly I did it online without expecting any outcome but thank god I was wrong!! Yippee.. So there again a Lot of my time that I would have spent by travelling and waiting were minimised. God Bless the Internet ;)

Who is that who told me not to waste away my youth sleeping? I thought of taking your statement into consideration and thought of giving some exercise to my spine rather than sleeping. Now I feel so active, that I have trouble falling asleep at night and am too sleepy in the mornin.. grrr.. Conclusion: Laziness = Good Sleep :P

April was a real good month with Trashionista giving away 1 book daily, though I dint win any it was fun competing! Sad May is not April, but I seem to be liking May too. Feels like a new year and some of my resolutions (minor ones) have ticked off in this month. More to go but Masha Allah, so far so good :) .

Oh the Perfume festival here! The 16th Heritage festival Of Traditional Perfumery and Incence held for 6 days here.. UMMM (Inhaling D-E-E-P) was lovely! All the arab flavours of Perfumes and incence just took my breath away and yeah a little bit of my wallet too.. But who cares.. UMMM! (Inhaling DEEP again!)

After a gap of two weeks I was back to Henna’ing my hair which implies a) End of my Flu b) Its S-U-MM-E-R! Speaking of Summer, I LUUURVE Lemon Juice with Mint, and lots of Mint at that. Havent come across the recipe of the taste I’m looking for, maybe I should just experiment and if it turns out well will put up the recipe here! :)

My daaarrling A.R.Rahman’s music will be out soon in another movie. Can’t wait for its music release to get hold of the tracks. Am talking about Jaane Tu ya Jaane Na people (yeah Aamir Khan’s nephew debut) and am in love with the song ADITI of that movie. Hope other songs are equally good :)

And before I wind up to give some rest to my eyes, WordPress allows you to password protect your posts and keep some posts private to oneself. So in the near future if you see a password protected post feel free to ask me for the password (Applies only to my friends, not open to public.. Heheh Sorryy).
