What Does Sumaiya Mean?

5 10 2008

Something that brings in people to my blog is their hope to find an answer to the question, “What does Sumaiya mean?”. I do not understand how that may be related to my blog unless the name ofcourse, and how my blog ends up in the search result. Or is it that there is actually no satisfactory meaning to my name that it ends up with my blog as one of the results? Well I too for one have searched the meaning of my name but then had to give up. Having heard, “Oh! What a beautiful Arabic name” (I heard the same today too!), nobody knows exactly what it means, other than the fact that it was the name of the first woman martyr in Islam (brutally murdered :( ).

I wonder sometimes that in this generation we could say it was her (Sumaiya RAH’s) name, but what did it mean when she was born and named by her parents? Wouldn’t that name have meant something during her lifetime? Or don’t all ancient names have meanings? One definition of my name I liked was “Warrior Princess” mistakenly coined by one of my friend. I had told him it was the name of the first female martyr in Islam and next time he tells you really are a warrior princess! Thankyou J, I am on cloud nine :D .

But jokes apart, what does Sumaiya really mean? Think you have the answer or do you want to discuss? There’s no shortage of space to comment..   So all you Sumaiya’s out there, their relatives, friends or going to be parents of the confused little ‘What does my name mean’ baby Sumaiya’s, Comment away! :)

Update: This is how Sumaiya is written in Arabic -> سمية

Hello Sumaiya,

I always imagined the phrase refers to something angelic so I guess purity seems to connect with the ‘from the sky’ meaning. I must admit one thing, I never verified anywhere whether the meaning was right…i just believed in it :-) .

oh im so grateful that iv finally found the meaning of my name! iv always jst known that hazrat summaya was the first martyr woman in islam and iv always thot (as i think sumaiya whose blog it is did too) that it must have meant sumthing in her lifetime. so its angelic / pure / exalted/ high above for sure? all these mean almost the same. so i think i can safely assume that all these r correct. :)

Hi Sumaiya (’s)!

This is also very interesting to me, cauz my name is Simea and I was told that this is the Christian equivalent of Sumaiya! It’s very hard to find a good definition, but it could be that our name has the same origin…?

Funny detail, I found your website because I was looking for the receipe of lemon-mint juice. Yesterday I came back from Bahrain (visiting a friend) and that drink was my favourite. What a nice surprise to find this receipe from a Bahreini called Sumaiya!

Love

Hi,

Sumaiya does mean high above and pure and is the name of a flower which I read somewhere is the name of a beautiful flower that grows on the highest part of a mountain so I reckon that flower sums up all the meanings of pure, high above and beautiful in one!

Muslim interpreters of the term opine that the “shahid” testifies by his or her death of his faith or that the “shahid” dies during saying the shahadah (الشهادة – the principle of Islam). But there are more occasions when someone can earn this honorific title, see below.

The first Martyr in Islam actually was a Sumaiya (name meaning- Pure). Ibn Hijr says in his book Al-Isaabah fi Tamyeez al-Sahaabah, where he gives a biography of Sumayyah bint Khayyat:

“The daughter of Khabbaat and the mother of ‘Ammaar ibn Yaasir, she was the seventh person to enter Islam. She was tortured by Abu Jahl who stabbed her in her private parts, and she died. She was the first shaheedah (martyr) in Islaam… Al-Mujaahid said: The first seven to publicly declare their Islam in Makkah were: the Messenger of Allah , Abu Bakr, Bilaal, Khabbaab, Suhayb, ‘Ammaar and Sumaya. The Messenger of Allah and Abu Bakr were protected by their own people, but the others were forced to wear iron shields then were exposed to the burning sun. Abu Jahl came to Sumaya and stabbed her in her private parts, killing her. This was reported by Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah from Mujaahid; it is mursal and its isnaad is saheeh. Ibn Sa’d reported with a saheeh isnaad from Mujaahid: The first martyr in Islam was Sumayah, the mother of ‘Ammaar ibn Yaasir. She was an old, weak woman (according to a report narrated by al-Bayhaqi: Abu Jahl stabbed her in her private parts. Al-Dalaa’il, 2/282). When Abu Jahl was killed on the day of Badr, the Prophet said (to ‘Ammaar): ‘Allah has killed the one who killed your mother.’” (al-Isaabah, 4/327; al-Bidaayah wa’l-Nihaayah by Ibn Katheer, 3/59).

Summeiya

Wow so many Sumaiya’s! Though I spell my name differently, it’s still interesting to hear from people with the same name. I’m the only Summeiya I know. Like one Sumaiya said-I just believed in the meanings that I have come across. One woman phrased it as “to be at the summit” and that has been my favourite. Sounds more interesting than “proper name” haha.

Sumaya

Sumaya is small Samia, it is an arabic name. Samia is the feminin of Sami, or Sam. And the root of the word in Arabic is somow. Somow mean to rise to high level. Sumaya thus good be translated into “her highness.”

Sumaya is the name of the first Muslim woman who was killed by the pagan, becoming the first muslim Martyr woman, killed because of her religious belief.

The name Sumaya however exists almost in every culture, it is written as Soumaya or Sumeya etc………………

Be that as it may, the name Sumaya is an old arabic name with a lot of meanings attached to it, see meaning of Sam, the masculin equivalent.

Wassalam,

I named my daughter Sumaiya (now 4 months old) picking up the name from muslim names website. The name just stuck in my head and my heart. Now some people I know are suggesting that the name has a diffrent meaning from what I and we (referring to your site) know and ask me to rename.

I have asked them to substantiate their findings. If I do get some validated info I will post on this site.

Based on my 4months limited experience I can easily confirm that all sumaiya’s are lovely and very very pretty.

thanks and Allah bless
